The Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) was established with the purpose of contributing to the proper management and utilization of marine fisheries resources through survey research centering on whales and the international situation surrounding cetaceans and other marine mammals.

By studying and analyzing a variety of samples and data obtained trough whale research surveys we are aiming for the realization of sustainable use of whale resources.
ICR research activities include sighting surveys to evaluate resource abundance, a cetacean DNA registry and a marine mammal stranding record database.

Through whale research and sighting surveys we are collecting valuable biological data for whale resource assessment. We also study DNA of cetaceans netted as by-catch during fishing, and conduct research on cetacean and other marine mammal strandings.
ICR research data are made public free of charge to facilitate their utilization by scientists. In addition to the whale research data sets, long-term environmental data sets for the Southern Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean are available. Please refer to the protocols for data access.
