Welcome to the Institute of Cetacean Research

The Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) was established with the purpose of contributing to the proper management and utilization of marine fisheries resources through survey research centering on whales and the international situation surrounding cetaceans and other marine mammals.

The objective of the Institute of Cetacean Research is to contribute to the proper management and utilization of marine fisheries resources

Information about previous and ongoing survey collection of biological data on whales, cetacean resource assessment and research findings

What kind of research has ICR done until now?

Inform yourself about previous and ongoing whale research and findings.

Through study and analysis of whale research samples and data ICR aims for the realization of sustainable use of whale resources

Things we can know from studying obtained samples

By studying and analyzing a variety of samples and data obtained trough whale research surveys we are aiming for the realization of sustainable use of whale resources.

ICR research activities include non-lethal sighting surveys to evaluate resource abundance, a cetacean DNA registry and a marine mammal stranding record database

Non-capture whale research activities

ICR research activities include sighting surveys to evaluate resource abundance, a cetacean DNA registry and a marine mammal stranding record database.

Research Programs

The Institute of Cetacean Research collects valuable biological data for whale resource assessment. ICR also conducts studies on DNA of cetaceans netted as by-catch during fishing, and on whale strandings

Through whale research and sighting surveys we are collecting valuable biological data for whale resource assessment. We also study DNA of cetaceans netted as by-catch during fishing, and conduct research on cetacean and other marine mammal strandings.
